76ers unwilling to settle with new GM hire

Philadelphia 76ers managing partner Josh Harris wants a new general manager, but the franchise refuses to settle for just any candidate for the sake of filling the vacancy.Harris told ESPN the current management structure placing head coach Brett Brown atop the hierarchy on personnel decisions is sustainable.”It does leave open that possibility,” Harris said Monday. “We prefer to find an elite talent who can lead us, but we aren’t going to compromise.”Since Bryan Colangelo was dismissed in June on the heels of a controversy surrounding Twitter burner accounts used to critique players and share privileged information, vice president of basketball operations Elton Brand, assistant general manager Ned Cohen and senior vice president of player personnel Marc Eversley are directly advising Brown. Former assistant coach Jim O’Brien will also move into a front office role as the senior advisor to Brown, ESPN reported.”We prefer to find someone, but we don’t want to feel forced into compromising,” Harris said.Harris is still vetting assistant general managers and others in personnel evaluation and continues to establish a pool of candidates, but no formal interviews are arranged. ESPN reported the 76ers also inquired about other front-office executives, none of whom are likely to be allowed out of their existing contracts.”We’re going to have a pretty selective list. This is not going to be huge tournament. We’re going to talk to some people who aren’t sitting GMs who could add value to our situation,” Harris said. “What I’ve learned is that GM job has got many facets and that it’s a learned skill. It’s certainly got a public facing nature to it, but management and very strong relationships are important - and very few people who are not sitting GMs have all of those components. We have strengths in all those areas around our front office right now.”
