Adams becoming Hundley’s go-to WR for Packers

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Fourth-year wide receiver Davante Adams of the Green Bay Packers will become an unrestricted free agent next March. And after Aaron Rodgers suffered a broken collarbone on Oct. 8, it appeared as though Adams might have the most to lose.Suddenly, Adams was playing with a No. 2 quarterback, green-as-grass Brett Hundley instead of a future Hall of Fame quarterback. But Adams has shined in recent games and might be proving he can succeed with virtually anyone under center. On Sunday afternoon, Adams caught five passes for 90 yards and a touchdown. Adams also had two enormous fourth-quarter receptions as the Packers snapped a three-game losing streak and toppled host Chicago, 23-16.In a few short weeks, Adams and Hundley have developed a connection, and Adams has passed Jordy Nelson as Green Bay’s new “go-to” receiver.”He’s just a great receiver and I like throwing to him,” Hundley said of Adams.Adams made two big plays to help the Packers win for the first time since Oct. 8.With 5:29 left and the Packers clinging to a 16-13 lead, Green Bay faced a second-and-9 from the Bears’ 19-yard line. Hundley operated from the shotgun and the Packers lined up with three receivers.Adams lined up wide right and ran a 6-yard inside slant. Hundley looked left, saw nothing, then rolled right.Adams released for the right corner of the end zone and turned cornerback Kyle Fuller around. Hundley delivered a strike near the right pylon, Adams made a terrific 19-yard touchdown catch and the Packers took a 23-13 lead.Amazingly, that was Green Bay’s first passing touchdown since Week 6.”That’s something that those guys put a lot of work into,” Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said. “As far as playing in the pocket and transitioning out of the pocket.”One thing about Davante is that you’ve just got to put it in his catching radius and he’ll make the play. It was just two guys on the same page on a scramble drill. It was a big play.”Adams agreed.”It was a beautiful throw,” Adams said. “It was the best throw that I’ve seen him make and it was at a crucial time. So real proud of him for that.”After the Bears answered with a field goal to pull within 23-16, Green Bay faced a third-and-10 from its own 35 with 2:12 remaining. The Packers lined up with three receivers left, Adams to the right and Hundley in the shotgun.Chicago rushed five, Hundley remained calm in the pocket and Adams ran a go-route past Fuller once again. Hundley delivered a strike that went for 42 yards, and while the Packers didn’t score any points on that possession, that pitch-and-catch helped Green Bay burn an additional minute off the clock.”Yeah, I trust Davante,” Hundley said. “He’s an awesome receiver and he’s going to be one of the best receivers, if he’s not already, in the league. He’s a heck of a playmaker and that was what’s called a trust throw. Get it up there, let him make a play and he did what he does best.”Hundley and Adams have clearly developed a chemistry in their short time together.Over the last two games, Hundley has targeted Adams 18 times. Adams had 12 catches for 143 yards (11.9 average) and a touchdown in that stretch.Over that same time, Nelson has been targeted 11 times and has seven catches for 55 yards (7.8) and no touchdowns. Randall Cobb has been targeted nine times and has eight catches for 110 yards (13.8) and no touchdowns.”We have a trio of receivers that I’m happy to be throwing to any of them,” Hundley said. “So for me, I feel good with all my matchups whenever.”But every teacher has a pet and every quarterback has a favorite. And right now, that’s undoubtedly Adams.-It’s been a rocky year for Packers outside linebacker Nick Perry, who signed a five-year, $60 million contract last offseason.Perry entered Sunday’s game with a team-leading 4.0 sacks. But Perry broke a bone in his right hand in Week 2, and after undergoing surgery and missing a week, played with a cast for a stretch.Perry is rounding back into form and proved just that with a career-high three-sack performance against the Bears. In 67 career games prior to Sunday, Perry had 27.5 sacks and just four games with 2.0 sacks.Perry added a quarterback hurry and six tackles.”Just continue to go. Effort,” Perry said of what made him so effective Sunday. “Sometimes the first move doesn’t work, so you got to continue to press. Collapse the pocket, and just try to stay alive. I think I did some good things out there today.”-Former Packers tight end Martellus Bennett, who was released last week, said Green Bay doctor Pat McKenzie tried to “cover his own ass” and have Bennett play through a shoulder injury.Amazingly, Bennett was recovered enough to catch three passes for 38 yards Sunday night for New England. And Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and Nelson were among several current and former Green Bay players that came to McKenzie’s defense.”It’s the right thing to do, it’s the right thing to do,” Nelson said. “I think our docs and our trainers are some of the best. They’re the only ones I’ve been around in the NFL, but I’ve been around some others in college. They do a great job.”Our doc throws people out there when they’re injured and don’t want to play is not true. We have a very conservative doctor, almost to a fault, but we don’t like it. That’s what I just wanted to express. Everyone has their opinions, but I think not only myself, but a lot of other guys stood up for them - current players, former players years ago who are still sticking up for him. We love those guys. They do a lot for us. That’s why I did it.”NOTES: RB Aaron Jones suffered a sprained MCL and will miss multiple games. … RB Ty Montgomery reinjured his ribs and didn’t play in the second half.
