Angels’ Cozart to undergo shoulder surgery

Los Angeles Angels infielder Zack Cozart is set to undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, the team announced Wednesday.Cozart will have the surgery in Los Angeles in the “near future,” and a timetable for his potential return wasn’t announced. However, the severity of the injury likely means his season is over. The decision for Cozart to have the operation was made upon receiving a second opinion on his left shoulder after he continued to experience discomfort in the area while attempting to ramp up activities. Cozart was placed on the disabled list on June 15 (retroactive to June 14) with what the team called a left shoulder subluxation.Cozart, in the first season of a three-year, $38 million contract he signed with the Angels as a free agent over the winter, was hitting .219 with five home runs and 18 RBIs in 58 games before hitting the DL. Cozart was slated to begin the year as the team’s third baseman, but injuries to second baseman Ian Kinsler and shortstop Andrelton Simmons had him see significant time at all three positions.Cozart, 32, made his first career All-Star appearance last season in his seventh year with the Cincinnati Reds, finishing the campaign with a .297 average, 24 home runs and 63 RBIs.
