Los Angeles Angels outfielder Justin Upton will be sidelined 8 to 12 weeks with a left toe injury, the team announced prior to Friday’s game against the Oakland Athletics.Upton will spend the next four weeks in a walking boot. The 31-year-old suffered the injury when he ran into the wall in Sunday’s exhibition game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Angel Stadium.”It’s a sprain that has some significance to it,” Angels general manager Billy Eppler told reporters. “It’s going to require about 8 to 12 weeks. Everybody is different. Every human being is different.Everyone recovers differently — 12 is on the more cautious side, eight is on the more aggressive side. We’ll ultimately see how Justin progresses week to week.”Eppler said doctors told him Upton’s injury is “way more common in the NFL.”Los Angeles claimed outfielder Brian Goodwin on waivers earlier this week. For now, Goodwin and Peter Bourjos are set to platoon in Upton’s left field position.”Can we withstand it? We have to,” Angels manager Brad Ausmus told reporters of the loss of Upton. “We don’t have a choice.”Upton, a four-time All-Star, batted .257 with 30 homers and 85 RBIs in 145 games last season in his first full campaign with the Angels. He’s in the second year of a five-year, $106 million contract that includes a base salary of $18 million in 2019.Overall, Upton has a .268 average with 286 homers and 897 RBIs in 12 major league seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks (2007-12), Atlanta Braves (2013-14), San Diego Padres (2015), Detroit Tigers (2016-17) and Angels.
